Discussion: The Decline of the Flying Eagles as a Source of Future Super Eagles Megastars

Writer: adeola bankoleadeola bankole

It is no longer news that Egypt will now be hosting this year's U-20 Afcon where Nigeria will hope to triumph after original hosts Ivory Coast pulled out last minute.

In the good old days, the Flying Eagles will be the conveyor belt for future Super Eagles stars.

Mutiu Adepoju, Kelechi Iheanacho, Nduka Ugbade, Samson Siasia, Austin Okocha and Odion Ighalo are just a few ex-Flying Eagles stars to become superstar Super Eagles.

Where are Jude Sunday, Kehinde Ibrahim, Umeh Emmanuel, Salim Lawal and Ibrahim Muhammad that we paraded as strikers from the last U-20 World Cup?

With the Super Eagles midfield needing fresh, faster and more nimble legs, where are John Joshua, Samson Lawal, Ibrahim Abdullahi, Victor Eletu, Tochukwu Nnadi, and Daniel Daga that Ladan Bosso paraded in our midfield?

With the Super Eagles' centre back hemorrhaging, where are Njoku, Agbalaka, and Ogwuchie?

Nwabili is struggling and Okoye has to sort out his confidence issues with the Super Eagles. Where are Nathaniel Nwosu, John Utoblo and Chijoke Aniagboso?

Not a single one of Bosso’s 2023 Flying Eagles has graduated to the Super Eagles.

That is truly awful.

It begs the question: why should I be interested in following the Flying Eagles in this year’s U-20 Afcon if all the players will only end up on the cutting room floor of the Super Eagles?
